STEREO MAGAZINE GERMANY: “Everything seems to be cast in one piece, recorded by real musicians in a lively way and even garnished with a hit thanks to "Bang Bang Baby“.

“The young Canadian with Italian-British roots leaves nothing to chance with her largely self-financed debut. Everything seems to be cast of one piece, recorded lively by real musicians and even garnished with a hit thanks to 'Bang Bang Baby'. Her Pop-Soul is reminiscent of R'n'B colleagues like Adele or Amy Winehouse with clear sixties references, but still has both feet in the modern pop present.”

Album Review

FIDELITY MAGAZINE, GERMANY: “Let the work speak for itself, which, as you correctly assumed, has grown close to the professor's heart, otherwise it would not have found a place in our fine Rhythm and Soul Revue…Of course the whole thing sounds very, very advanced for a work of art, I would have liked a few more edges and a crack here and there. But the way, for example, in “Monaco” a grumbling western guitar wanders around in the crisp nu-soul arrangement, I really like that.”

DOLCE VITA: Canadian singer Bianca James bases her glamorous sixties soul pop on Dusty Springfield, the James Bond songs, her love for Italy - and on Lana Del Rey

By MARC VETTER

AN INTERVIEWER ALWAYS FEARS mumbling and mumbling when nothing can be understood. You don't have that problem with the Canadian singer Bianca James. She speaks with precision and accent, making it a pleasure to listen to her. There are several reasons for this, as she reveals: she has also worked as a spokeswoman for film advertisements in the past and her father can no longer hear very well.

This clarity of expression may also have flowed into the production of their first album, a magnificent collection of sixties pop songs with a touch of soul that seem very modern. The first single, "Monaco", already makes it clear that James has her desire to immerse herself in foreign places and a longing for cinematic memories of earlier times. "I've always wanted to have a European dolce vita says the Toronto-based daughter of an Italian father and a British mother.

The track quotes the typical Mark Ronson sound and combines it with fresh R&B elements and an enjoyable live groove. Grace Kelly and James Bond also hover over these sounds. "I'm just a dreamer and I like classic movies," says the singer, who sometimes sounds like Duffy but with a slightly sweeter twist. "As an artist, you're just trying to find fantasy perspectives on life, that's our job."

Of course, Bianca James would also like to write a song for the agent series. The 1960s almost inevitably became the template for her first songs, because her musical experience was shaped by her parents' and grandparents' record collections, she says. James was born with a fascination for British coolness. She's worked very hard for years as an independent musician and has stuck to her desire to be on stage (today it takes millions of listeners to get a record deal).

So she sold her car a while ago and used all her savings to record a first song with a producer in Los Angeles. The result was the nostalgically tinged "Bang Bang Baby," with a nod to Amy Winehouse and a bling-bling vibe that now permeates all of her songs. "This is music to make you feel sexy," James clarifies her approach. "I like glamor because it's pure beauty. And I like beauty in every form. It doesn't have to be expensive at all."

Their music, James admits, is meant to feel a little like sitting in the back seat of a vintage car. She says such things about the impact of her music more pointedly than any artist agent could. However, if you look at the single cover for "Monaco," you could easily mistake James for Lana Del Rey. She speaks admiringly of her as her "queen." But the only thing James adapted from the sadcore queen’s songs is the recourse to bygone times and the tendency to talk about all shades of love. The khol-eyeliner sadness was squeezed out, so to speak. Even if "Black & Blue" or the elegant "Till I Remember", which has a similar healing effect to the music of Norah Jones, touches on the dark side of love, it's more about liberation and the ability to process suffering. Maybe that's the direct line to her overt connection to the '60s, the Kinks, Dusty Springfield and the Beatles with orchestra.

James: “I often long for times that I have never experienced. A lot happened in the sixties. Women emancipated themselves, there was a great awakening and hope for something new.” Today everything is a little different. James thinks that fashion and art are just chasing after other eras. But that also has something good, because you can imagine yourself as a Bond girl if you just walk barefoot in a miniskirt through your own four walls.

There is no better way to describe how Bianca James' music feels.
